Happy New Year

We hope you are enjoying your time at Waterfront as a member. This year we aim to keep you informed about more things happening at the club.

We firmly believe that our golf club is one of the most progressive members clubs around and us as owners hope you can all see the constant investment in facilities around the clubhouse, range and especially the golf course are paying off and giving you all a great experience.

We will hopefully be adding a new fairway mower to the growing number of machines available for Richard and his team to keep the course in tip top condition this season, this will allow us to move the current fairway mower on to the first cut of semi making the course not only look tidier but also play a little more forgiving for them just off the fairway shots.

Our par 3 development has finally begun and after over 2 years of planning consultation and way more expense than first being told!! we are at long last on the way with it. We expect the course to take at least 2 years to form and mature enough for use so thanks for bearing with us while we have materials and machinery coming into site. The process is vital for our club to continue to grow and help develop junior and new golfers coming into our sport.

2018 and 2019 brought us many difficulties with the drought of 2018 and the irrigation pump breaking down at exactly the wrong time Richard, Brad and Keith worked wonders at keeping the greens in great order and extracting the old pump from the lake and placing the new one back in. The new pump and temporary one used to keep the greens alive while the replacement was built and delivered meant that over £9000 had to be spent (this figure would have been over £15000 without help from members and green keeping staff going that extra mile!)

2019 brought different problems namely our vandalism from quads and motorbikes! While we would all like to take matters in to our own hands we think continuous pressure from us all going down the correct channels is the only way forward and as we speak Police and councils are talking with us on how we can keep it from happening again. Once again we all owe our green keeping team a massive thank you for the great repair work they continue to do. The greens will recover as soon as the growing season starts we just need to keep the bad guys off! Talking to members and hearing your views really brings it home how much of a CLUB we really are and we as a family are incredibly proud and very touched by the support and many kind words, emails, phone calls and thoughts that you our members have all passed on. Thank you.

So what will 2020 bring??? Well let us hope for kind weather and no major problems like the last few years, we are hoping to get our adult membership number above the 200 mark this coming year which would be a first for Waterfront Golf. With golf clubs struggling to retain members and finding it financially difficult to even stay open these days it makes finding new members really important. Please continue your great work at bringing potential new members to our club, it is needed and much appreciated. Subscription costs will increase slightly this year as usual but I’m sure everybody recognises it is inevitable with rising costs across the board to keep the club and course running. Your subs next year will include a £20 range credit for 7 day members and a £10 range credit for 5 day members. Your 10% members discount behind the bar will continue. All members will receive a luxury PEN  when paying there subs this year!! This is just another little thank you and I hope it will also stop people taking ours 😉 Your club has the best practice facilities in the area and with our range and indoor areas makes for a great place to improve, you have 3 of the best PGA instructors in the UK who continue to get busier every year so please use us and the great tech we have to improve your game.

A big thanks as always go to our great team of staff who help us keep the club running smoothly and a big thanks to your committee who give up their time to help administer the comps amongst other club duties.

We will have owned Waterfront for 6 years in August and can’t believe how fast the time has gone. We are building into a members golf club that is now the envy of many in the area and we know this is down to a great atmosphere and a tolerance of all fellow members by you all.

On behalf of our family may I wish you all the best for the coming season and here is to some great weather, golf and most of all good fun with friends.

As usual if you have any ideas or issues please speak to us and we will try to accommodate.

Thank you Frank, Jo, Frankie, Luca, Dante and the Waterfront team.

6-18 Team Pipped at the Post

The 6-18 Team finished the season in 2nd place in Divison 1 despite a 6-2 home win against Crookhill in their final game of the campaign. Some indifferent results on the road had put them on the back foot but a strong home win meant that Phoenix had to beat Crookhill by the same scoreline or better to beat them to top spot. Unfortunately an 8-0 win for Phoenix two days later meant that they were crowned Champions.

Team Manager John Stead would to thank everyone who has represented the team this season for their efforts and all the supporters who came to watch them throughout.

Scratch Team Result: Waterfront 8-0 Tinsley Park (WATERFRONT ARE PROMOTED TO DIVISON 4 AS CHAMPIONS)

A perfect result to seal a perfect ending to the 2019 campaign with the League team securing the Division 5 championship.

After a tough away fixture at Roundwood, where they were beaten 6-2, and a creditable 4-4 draw at Owston Hall, which saw Cian Guest hole a tricky 4 foot putt on the last to secure a half point in his first ever appearance for the team, team manager John was somewhat surprised to see Waterfront still sat top of the table going into the last round of fixtures.

But with a clutch of teams now in the hunt for promotion, 6 points were required to guarantee promotion and 7 for the league. In tough conditions the lads duly delivered, with big wins from George and Chappy followed up by victories for Luca and Dave who both held their nerve to win on the last.

Team Manager John would like to thank everyone who represented the team over the season, the supporters and caddies who make the players job a lot easier, the catering staff for the top notch food, Frank, Jo and our Shirt Sponsors Jakto for making it all possible, and the green keepers for keeping the course in tremendous condition throughout the season.

Congratulations to everyone involved and lets hope for more success next season!!

Winning Team:

Luca Houlgate – W 1up

Dave Sanby – W 1up

George Barlow – W 6&5

Gareth Chapman – W 6&4

Luca Smashes Course Record

A new amateur course record was set in July’s Monthly Medal with Luca Houlgate shooting a magnificent 66 (-5) which included 6 birdies and an eagle! He matches the Pro’s record which was set in 2013 by our former Teaching Pro Iain Pyman.

To top off a remarkable weekend, Luca then went on to win the S.U.G.C Junior Strokeplay title at Lees Hall the day after with another terrific score of 1 under par.

Everyone at Waterfront Golf would like to congratulate Luca on both of his achievements and good luck with his golf in the future as he continues to improve!

6-18 H’cap League Result: Waterfront 5-3 Bondhay

A crucial home victory for the 6-18 team against a very strong Bondhay team who always give the lads a run for their money. Rossy holing a nervy 5 footer on the last to secure a half in his match with partner Chris Dryden and the win overall. Waterfront are in a strong position heading into the final part of the season with games in hand on the teams above them.

Winning Team: Andy Hall, Cian Guest, John Ross Lane, Chris Dryden, Charlie Jones, Rob Batham, Rob Beaumont and Frankie Houlgate.

Kyle Wins 9 Hole Major

Congratulations to Kyle Lupton who topped off an excellent week, which included a big win at Owston Hall for the League Team and becoming a Category 1 golfer for the first time, with victory in this years 9 Hole Major. A +1 gross total for a Nett 34 ( 2 under) was enough to claim the trophy, beating Mark Tester, Cian Guest and Adam Tuck on countback.

Scratch Team Result: Rother Valley 5-3 Waterfront

A narrow defeat for the scratch team on Wednesday night but 3 valuable points never the less. With the youngsters both losing narrowly it was George who made it 6 wins on the bounce, on a personal level, to get them underway and then Dave maintained his unbeaten away record by winning the last hole to secure a half in a nervy finale. The lads have a week off next week before their final 3 games of the season and with the league table starting to concertina up slightly every point is going to be vital.

Luca Houlgate – L  2Down

Lucas Martin – L 2&1

George Barlow – W 4&2

Dave Sanby – A/S

Scratch Team Result: Waterfront 6-2 Doncaster Town Moor

Another solid home win for the Scratch team which cements their place at the top of the table. An unfortunate mix up in the Town Moor ranks saw them only field 3 players giving Chappy a walkover win. Wins for Luca and George ensured Waterfront put 6 points between themselves and their 2nd placed opponents. The table is starting to shape up nicely but with 3 away games on the spin coming up there are more strong performances needed to secure promotion.

Luca Houlgate – W 4&3

Dave Sanby – L 2&1

George Barlow – W 4&2

Gareth Chapman – W W/O 10&8

Scratch Team Result: Tinsley Park 4-4 Waterfront

2nd vs 1st did battle on Wednesday evening with a draw seeing Waterfront stay top of Division 5 and maintain a 4 point gap between themselves and their hosts. While Luca and Kyle dropped on opponents who were on top form on the day, Dave kept up his 100% record this season and George put everyone through the ringer once again to secure victory on the last and a draw overall. The lads sit two points clear at the top at the half way point in the season and take on Town Moor at home this week, who are now their nearest challengers.
